The New Studio - How to style Maximalist Wallpaper

Updated: May 29, 2020

Here at Anna Hayman Designs I have a useful new Pop Up studio in addition to the office, and I'll be using it to show you how you can layer our products, including styling up our maximalist wallpaper. I love how our wallpapers lend to different looks, a little vintage styling here....a little dark decor there....see below the various set ups and how I created them;

Many people assume I am based in London, but I am actually in beautiful Lewes, Sussex. I work from a set of studios in the countryside.

Lewes being an extremely creative place, the landlords decided to build additional workspace in one of the beautiful old barns. They are also going to develop a community including a shared eating area and garden. I said I'd love to be involved, and signed up for a 3.5 x 4.5m 'pod' with gorgeous natural light that we can dress and use for styling as we please. I am basically now renting an interiors playroom, which I'm sure you can appreciate is incredibly exciting and very much needed to show off our ever expanding product range....

So I started by showcasing our latest maximalist wallpaper - OYSTER. This paper had a fantastic response from our instagram followers, so I wanted to show it off to it's best. An Art Nouveau inspired design, with elegant seashell shapes in soft black and gold, this wallpaper is a cinch to style as you can pull out metallics, vintage themes, boho vibes, or a more contemporary feel. This paper is SO so easy to hang, as you paste the wall, and this went up very easily on the OSB surface. See our instagram highlights where I hang it on a time-lapse video.

See below my initial thoughts, when thinking about styling maximalist wallpaper I made a mood wall to pull together existing ideas and colours that might match. I love it mixed with animal print, which gives our OYSTER a sexed up edge, and bringing out the black tones a little more. It actually fits well with many of the exisiting patterns in the collection, as gold and black is an Anna Hayman key combination. All the lino prints are mine and the 1920's portrait is by Penny Feathers Vintage

Next we tried a classic vintage look using one of our fringed lampshades, in the matching velvet fabric. We paired the brown of the 1930's desk with the edging on the print, this has an effect of softening the black as opposed to pinging it out. As we are going for a maximalist look here all the items are highly detailed, the vintage style telephone (ebay find) echoing the twisted wooden lamp base made by my father. Everything is centralised, and there's a feeling of calm and order while being highly decorative. This pulls out the warmer tones of this design and we love it for an older style property.

Then I wanted to create a very layered look, when styling maximalist wallpaper we feel layering is everything, and plants are a great way to begin adding texture to an interior setting. I used a mixture of faux plants from our lovely stockists Rockett St George and Ebay, varying the heights widths and types. I added in some vintage nods with the lighting and oil lamps, and ceramics I made a few years ago. Finally I hung some impactful Art Prints to conjure interest and personality within the scheme. This pulls out the intricacy of the wallpaper design and these prints both echo the curves nicely. I chose prints from instagrammers Amy Beager (portrait) and Out of ink Studio (C), see below detail shots and other examples of their beautiful work.

More from Amy Beager, fashion illustrator and artist. I found Amy's work via insta and fell in love with her sultry painterly style. 'Alice in Gucciland' was a clear choice for us as I love a big 'ol pair of sunglasses and a maximalist vibe! This Kate Bush portrait (bottom right) will be my next purchase as I'd love to see her styled up with my GIRAFFE pattern.

More from Penny Feathers Vintage - this gorgeous portrait in emerald tones mixing well with our double fringed cushions. Debbie creates portraits and mixed material A3 prints using inks and metallic pens. She hand embellishes prints to really bring an authentic 'original' artwork feel.

More from emerging print maker Out of Ink Studio

There I was thinking I was bored of alphabet merch when I find Kasia creating these happy go lucky prints. She also does personalised prints, see her etsy shop which has a range of colourful and cute ideas, great for gifts.
